Mike Yastrzemski to be limited during start of Spring Training

The San Francisco Giants are dealing with a list of injuries during the opening days of Spring Training.

As some players continue to work their way back to the field, outfielder Mike Yastrzemski will also be working through an injury before taking the field for his first Spring game.

According to the Giants, Yastrzemski will be limited in the outfield during the first seven to ten days of camp as he deals with a left shoulder impingement.

While Yastrzemski is limited in the field, he is hitting without restrictions and is already back to throwing at 90 feet.

Yastrzemski, 33, isn’t expected to miss much Spring Training action–if any–as the veteran returns for his sixth season in a San Francisco uniform.

New Giants manager Bob Melvin told reporters that he expects Yastrzemski and fellow injured outfielder Austin Slater to be ready for Opening Day on March 28th, where Yastrzemski is expected to start in right field.

Melvin recently shared that he is envisioning a starting outfield alignment of Yastrzemski in right, recently signed Korean star Jung Hoo Lee in center, and returning left fielder Michael Conforto back in his usual position.

Yastrzemski is fresh of a respectable 2023 campaign that saw the Vanderbilt alumni hit .233 with 15 home runs and 43 RBI over 106 appearances. The outfielder also walked 45 times (against 99 strikeouts) and laced 23 doubles (second-most on team) for the Giants.

After earning $6.1 million in 2023, Yastrzemski will receive $7.9 million after reaching an arbitrary agreement with San Francisco earlier this offseason. The veteran outfielder will reach free agency following the 2025 season.
