Third baseman J.D. Davis has become a free agent with less than a month until Opening Day.

According to the San Francisco Chronicle, the San Francisco Giants released the infielder on Monday, just days after placing him on waivers. The team has not yet announced the move.

Davis, an Elk Grove native, became expendable when the Giants reached an agreement with third baseman Matt Chapman on a three-year, $54 million deal.

Earlier this offseason, the 30-year-old infielder won an arbitration case over the Giants, which would have awarded him a $6.9 million salary. However, because he was released before Opening Day, he’ll only earn about $1.1 million from San Francisco.

The Giants traded for J.D. Davis in August 2022. That deal saw San Francisco send Darin Ruf to New York Mets in exchange for Davis, LHP Thomas Szapucki, RHP Carson Seymour and LHP Nick Zwack. In his lone full season with the Giants, Davis hit 18 homeruns on a .311 batting average and a .354 on-base percentage.

Davis was drafted by the Houston Astros in 2014 and he would go on to make his major league debut in 2017. He also had a brief stint with the New York Mets.
