Athletics recall 2B Zack Gelof, DFA INF Luis Urias

The Athletics recalled second baseman Zack Gelof from Triple-A Las Vegas and designated second baseman Luis Urías for assignment, the club announced today.

Gelof joins the Athletics for the second time this year.  He began the season on the 60-day injured list after having right hamate surgery on March 24, was reinstated on July 4, and went 2-for-25 (.080) with 13 strikeouts in eight games before he was optioned to Las Vegas July 13.

The 25-year-old right-handed hitter batted .259 with 11 home runs, 28 RBI, and a .897 OPS in 33 games with the Aviators following his July 13 option and hit .256 with 12 home runs, 31 RBI, and a .888 OPS in 47 games overall at Triple-A.

Urías was on the Athletics roster for the entire season with the exception of an eight-game stint on the injured list in early July.  He hit .230 with eight home runs and 25 RBI in 96 games.  Urias made 83 starts at second base and five at third base.

The Athletics are in the midst of their first of what’s expected to be their three-season stay in California’s capital.

While plans remain in place for the team to relocate to Las Vegas, Sacramento mayor Kevin McCarty says they’re “still in the mix for baseball.”

I’ve been talking to the Athletics and the MLB. I think they’re more than likely going to go to Las Vegas,” McCarty told The Drive Guys.

His optimism centered less around the A’s, more on expansion. “Sacramento is absolutely in the mix,” he said.

McCarty was told they’re looking for one West team and one East. Nashville is already largely considered the favorite for the East.

Meanwhile, Sacramento is in the mix along with Portland, Salt Lake City, and San Antonio, according to Mayor McCarty.

Proving their ability to sell sponsors within the stadium and city will be crucial, making the A’s attendance in the coming years impactful.

McCarty is willing to provide added support to the Athletics, but would hope for something in return.

“We’ll step up more and support you, (if you) maybe throw us a bone and call us the Sacramento A’s. Come on now, you play here.”
