It’s been almost seven months since the 2023 NFC Championship Game, with Brock Purdy set to take the field for the first time this fall.
The San Francisco 49ers quarterback is set to play in his first preseason action of the new league year Saturday. Seen warming up with the rest of the team, Purdy will suit up for the first time since tearing his right UCL in January.
The gunslinger underwent extensive elbow surgery in March, put on a six-month timeline to return to the practice field. Purdy not only beat that diagnosis, but is fit enough to play in real-game action only five months post-operation.
Practicing as QB1 of the 49ers all training camp, coach Kyle Shanahan mentioned that he would consider having the starters out there for a series or two Saturday. Confirming the news on KNBR Friday, Purdy and much of the starters will play against the Denver Broncos.

The plan is for the starting QB to get a series or two in the first quarter Saturday, before fellow QB Sam Darnold closes out the rest of the first half. Trey Lance will likely start the second half of Saturday’s exhibition, with Brandon Allen possibly seeing some snaps in the fourth quarter.
Brock Purdy was seen going through calisthenics in pregame, before getting his arm loose with some deep balls to coaching staff. The QB has talked about his arm strength at length this month, noting that he feels back to normal on the field.
Joining Purdy on the field Saturday will be most of the starters, including wide receivers Deebo Samuel & Brandon Aiyuk, and fullback Kyle Juszczyk. Not playing Saturday amongst the starters will be left tackle Trent Williams and running back Christian McCaffrey.
