Only two games into the Sacramento Kings and Golden State Warriors series and there’s already controversy. And not surprisingly, Draymond Green is at the center of it all.

Several minutes into the fourth quarter of the Warriors’ Game 2 loss, Green was ejected and assessed a Flagrant 2 foul after stomping on the chest Kings center Domantas Sabonis. The two had gotten entangled and Sabonis grabbed Green’s leg while he was on the floor. Sabonis was assessed a technical foul.

On Tuesday night, the NBA announced they’ve suspended Green for one game. In an interview with ESPN, NBA executive vice president Joe Dumars the decision did not come lightly.

“It was a debate throughout the office all day yesterday on this. It wasn’t a quick or easy or light decision. We understand the ramifications of a decision like this. Here’s the thing…the act itself we felt was over the top and excessive, the condruct detrimental, some of the things that went on after the incident, and then also the repeat offender. We think in totality, you take all three of those things and that’s where you end up landing with a suspension.”

Throughout his career, Green has been assessed:

  • 163 technical fouls
  • 19 flagrant fouls
  • 17 ejections
  • Roughly $1.4 million in fines

What games was Draymond Green suspended?

Surprisingly, this suspension is only the fourth in Green’s career.

His first came in Game 5 of the 2016 NBA Finals. The Warriors star was suspended after getting entangled with LeBron James, then giving the King a shot to the groin. James would go on to lead the Cavaliers back from a 3-1 deficient and win the series.

The second suspension came in 2018, the final year of Kevin Durant’s tenure with Golden State. The two got into a heated argument during and after an overtime loss to the Los Angeles Clippers. Following the incident, the Warriors suspended Green for “conduct detrimental to the team.”

The third suspension came this past season. Green was assessed his 16th technical foul after throwing the basketball at Russell Westbrook’s head. Because that was his 16th technical foul, he was automatically given a suspension.

And some reading this might think the punch is getting left out. When Draymond Green punched teammate Jordan Poole during a team practice, he wasn’t suspended. The team fined him and he spent time away from the team before rejoining them early in the season.
