While the 2023 NBA Draft is less than two weeks away, the presumed No.1 overall pick is still playing basketball this weekend.
French phenom Victor Wembanyama and Metropolitans 92 are set to begin play in the LNB Pro A Finals Saturday. They will be taking on No. 1 seed AS Monaco in a best-of-five series. Monaco feature a slew of former NBA talent, including Donatas Motiejūnas and Élie Okobo.
Wembanyama has been crucial to his team’s success this season, helping them reach second in league standings. His play has been the key, averaging 21.6 points and 10.4 rebounds in 34 games played.
The Metropolitans have taken care of business thus far, defeating their first two opponents in seven games total. Wemby has played a big part in that, closing out the semifinals with 15 points and seven rebounds.
While the American landscape is enamored with his potential in the NBA, leaving French basketball with a ring would only intensify his aura as an all-world talent. And given his lofty expectations by others, this could be the sign of things to come if Metropolitans wins the championship.
“I’m trying to win a ring asap, so be ready,” he told ESPN’s Brian Windhorst after the Spurs won the draft lottery.
