Jimmy G has spoken.

In the days following the surprising trade between the San Francisco 49ers and Dallas Cowboys that sent former third-overall pick Trey Lance to Texas, Garoppolo shared his thoughts on his former team’s decision to trade the young quarterback.

Garoppolo, who spent six seasons with San Francisco before signing a deal this summer to become the Las Vegas Raiders’ quarterback, hopped on Sports Illustrated’s Robin Lundberg’s podcast to talk about his new home, the Lance trade, and more.

When asked about the trade that sent Lance to the Cowboys, Garoppolo said it was a “weird situation.”

“Weird situation,” Garoppolo said while shaking his head with a smile. “But, a lot of weird situations over there in San Francisco. We’ll just leave it at that. But, you know, I’m happy that Trey got another shot, man.”

In a follow-up, Lundberg asked Garoppolo how he thinks the 49ers have handled their recent quarterback issues, which alluded to not just the Lance trade, but Garoppolo’s tumultuous final seasons in the red and gold.

Lundburg: “How do you think San Francisco has handled those quarterback situations?”

Garoppolo: “How do you think they’ve handled them?”

Lundburg: “I think it’s been messy, I’ll put it that way.”

Garoppolo: (laughs) “That’s a nice way to put it.”

Even though Garoppolo is now a Raider, it appears that the former 49ers QB still has a chip on his shoulder when it comes to looking back at his time in San Francisco.

About the Trey Lance-Cowboys Trade

Written by Sactown Sports’ 49ers insider Amiliano Fragoso

After months of drama, a Trey Lance trade by the San Francisco 49ers has finally happened.

Reports surfaced last Friday afternoon that the 49ers and the Dallas Cowboys were in the process of finalizing a trade that will send the disgruntled quarterback to Texas. San Francisco will reportedly receive a 2024 fourth-round draft pick for Lance, far less than the value of the player at a position of desire.

The news was reported by ESPN’s Adam Schefter and NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport Friday, with local media confirming the news thereafter.

Trey Lance, 23, was selected with the third overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft. Entering Year 3, the QB has started only four games, holding a record of 2-2. He has thrown for 797 passing yards, five touchdowns, and three interceptions in the NFL.

The gunslinger has been bombarded by injuries and inconsistency since joining the Red & Gold, suffering a second-ending ankle fracture in Week 2 of last season. He now heads to Dallas where he will compete with Dak Prescott for minutes under center. The Cowboys will take on the remaining $6.25 million of Lance’s deal over the next two seasons.

On the other end, San Francisco moves forward with Brock Purdy as the team’s starter, hoping he can lead them to Super Bowl trophy No.6.
