A’s third base coach Eric Martins joined The Allen Stiles Show on Tuesday to discuss the Athletics trade that sent All-Star closer Mason Miller to the San Diego Padres.

“Look, you’re not going to just trade him to trade him,” Martins said of the deal.

The returning centerpiece for the Athletics was 18-year-old SS Leo De Vries (MLB Pipeline No. 3 overall prospect), RHP Braden Nett (Padres’ No. 3), RHP Henry Baez (No. 13), and Eduarniel Nunez (No. 17).

LHP JP Sear was also sent to San Diego as part of the deal.

“I think the organization and us as a whole feel really good about what we got. We got the number three prospect in all of baseball. We got De Vries, a shortstop who’s going to be a superstar. He’s going to be an All-Star.”

“When you have an opportunity to make the future even brighter, then you do it, and we got a pretty good haul for Mason and JP [Sears].”

Athletics rookie first baseman Nick Kurtz is looking like an All-Star in the making, and his recent honors have placed him in rare company.

Kurtz was named American League Rookie of the Month and American League Player of the Month on Monday, thanks to a memorable month of July that has put the 22-year-old in the driver’s seat for the American League Rookie of the Year Award.

In July, Kurtz hit .395 with a 1.433 OPS, 13 doubles, 11 home runs, 27 RBI, and 25 extra-base hits. For the month, he led the American League in average, on-base-percentage (.480), slugging (.953), OPS, doubles, RBI, extra-base hits, and total bases (82).

Additionally, he was tied for first in home runs, tied for second in runs scored (24), and ranked second in hits (34). On July 25 at Houston, Nick Kurtz went 6-for-6 with six runs scored, a double, and four home runs, becoming the 20th player and first rookie in Major League history with a four-homer game.
