After a phenomenal start to his MLB career, Athletics first-baseman Nick Kurtz is taking home his first piece of big league hardware.
The 22-year-old was unanimously voted the American League Rookie of the Year. Ironically, his teammate, SS Jacob Wilson, finished second in the voting. His hot start was slowed by injury before being completely overshadowed by Kurtz’s monster games.
Kurtz led all rookies in the 2025 season with 36 home runs and 86 RBIs. His batting average (.311) was tied for second-best in the AL among all players.

Oh yeah, and he hit four home runs in one game. When he won a Silver Slugger award a few days ago, Rookie of the Year felt all but inevitable.
Kurtz becomes the last Athletics player since Andrew Bailey in 2009 to win the award. Behind Kurtz and Wilson in the voting were Boston’s Roman Anthony and Carlos Navaez, Kansas City’s Noah Cameron, and Colson Montgomery of the White Sox.
Braves’ Drake Baldwin won the honors in the National League. It’s a great compliment showing belief in the future, and clearly nobody is doubting what Nick Kurtz can become and already is.

The San Francisco Giants may have finished the 2025 season with one of the top-ten pitching staff ERAs in Major League Baseball, but that might not stop them from pursuing Max Scherzer this offseason.
As MLB free agency gets underway, The Athletic‘s Ken Rosenthal reports that many around the league expect the three-time Cy Young Award winner to land with the Giants, pairing him with recently-hired manager Tony Vitello, who coached Scherzer during his college days at Missouri.
Scherzer, 41, just put the finishing touches on his 18th big-league season with the Toronto Blue Jays, where he started Game 7 of the World Series against the Los Angeles Dodgers. The right-hander looked strong over 4.1 innings, allowing just one run while striking out three before exiting the game with a 3-1 lead.
Toronto went on to lose in extra innings as the Dodgers claimed a second-straight title.
