Watch: Eric Martins On Athletics Recent Success, Langeliers Grand Slam Off Skubal | 10 mins
Athletics third base coach Eric Martins joined The Allen Stiles Show on Tuesday to discuss the team’s play, including finding success against American League Cy Young Favorite Tarik Skubal.
Allowing six runs (without affecting his ERA) was the most Skubal has allowed in any game this season. A large majority came in off of Shea Langeliers grand slam in the seventh inning.
It was the first grand slam Skubal has given up and took the A’s catcher to 17 homers post All-Star break, which leads the MLB.
“He’s kind of the glue that keeps everybody together,” Coach Martins said of Lageliers.
“If it wasn’t for Cal Raleigh, we’d be talking about him being the best catcher in the American League and maybe in baseball,” he continued.
Sneaking away with a win against Detroit, the Athletics have improved to 20-15 since the All-Star break.
Young talent like Langeliers, Nick Kurtz, Jacob Wilson, Colby Thomas, and others have helped create an internal belief in the group.
Martins has remained adamant that they still have a chance this season, but also acknowledged that avoiding a disastrous start next season will be a focus.
“We’ve got to find a way next season to eliminate that big stretch like we had this year and years prior and put ourselves in this position where we want to be at the end of the year, every single year,” he said.
The Athletics are 12 games behind the AL West-leading Houston Astros and 10.5 games behind the final AL Wild Card spot with 29 regular-season games remaining.
