The San Francisco 49ers have been looking to get back to their old ways this offseason, enhancing that notion by bringing Mick Lombardi back onboard.
NBC Sports Bay Area’s Matt Maiocco reported Thursday night that Lombardi would be joining the 49ers coaching staff for the 2024 season. The news comes after coach Kyle Shanahan revealed it the reporter, not making a declaration of title just yet.
The 49ers have not announced the addition at this time, and have yet to do so for previous defensive coaching hires this offseason.
The Mick Lombardi connections are interesting. He was with the 49ers beginning in the Harbaugh era (2013-16). He began prior to that in the Patriots’ scouting department. Later coached QBs and receivers in New England, so he worked with Tom Brady. The Josh McDaniels connection…

Mick Lombardi previously worked for the 49ers between 2013 and 2016, working closely with Jim Harbaugh. He has worked with the New York Jets, New England Patriots and Las Vegas Raiders as well, serving as various offensive coaching titles. He last was the offensive coordinator under Josh McDaniels in Vegas, but was let go in the middle of last season as a part of the Raiders cleaning house.
Mick Lombardi is the son of Mike Lombardi, a legendary front-office executive that worked with Mike Shanahan, and the 49ers, on separate occasions.
The youngest Lombardi’s title with the 49ers is not known at this time. SF has seen an exile of coaches this offseason, shaking up0 both the offense and defense. The 49ers promoted Nick Sorensen to defensive coordinator, while bringing Brandon Staley on as the assistant head coach.
