While the Eric Kendricks runaround certainly hurt the 49ers, adding a player like De’Vondre Campbell makes up for it.
Reports surfaced Friday morning that the former All-Pro linebacker and the San Francisco 49ers agreed to terms on a one-year deal. The move gives SF much-needed starting quality at the position, especially with Dre Greenlaw recovering from Achilles surgery. SF had reported interest in Campbell Thursday, with a deal coming together less than 24 hours later.
NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport was first with the news, as local media confirmed the signing thereafter. Further contract details have not been released at this time.

De’Vondre Campbell, 30, is entering his ninth season in the NFL, drafted in 2016. He has been a tackling machine since turning professional, accumulating 779 combined tackles and 40 tackles for loss. He also has 22 quarterback hits, 28 pass breakups and 8 forced fumbles. The Florida native made his first All-Pro team in 2021 with the Packers.
Sadly, injuries have hampered him the last two seasons, missing a combined 10 regular-season games. He finished 2023 with 75 tackles in only 11 contests, showing his skills have not diminished.
The signing of Campbell is paramount for the 49ers next season, after losing Eric Kendricks to the Cowboys earlier this week. The former Packer will be starting-level insurance while Dre Greenlaw recovers from a torn Achilles suffered in Super Bowl LVIII. While it is expected the latter will resume his starting role upon return, Campbell’s signing only adds more firepower to the 49ers’ defense.
The Red & Gold also re-signed backup LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles to a one-year deal Thursday, looking to make the LB room a strength once more in 2024.
