At long last, the 49ers have made a trade on deadline day. And it’s a big one, adding Chase Young to their already explosive defensive line.
Reports surfaced Tuesday morning that the Washington Commanders’ star pass rusher has been traded to the San Francisco 49ers. The deal has been completed, according to sources, with the Commanders receiving a third-round pick for the player. For the 49ers, this is a clear indication of urgency, as general manager John Lynch is banking on a Super Bowl-or-Bust 2023 NFL season.
ESPN’s Adam Schefter confirmed the details of the trade Tuesday.
The 49ers’ defensive line now includes…

🏈 Javon Hargrave

Chase Young, 24, is a former second-overall pick in the 2020 NFL Draft. After having an excellent rookie season, Young was barred by season-ending injuries over the last two seasons. Now fully healthy in 2023, he has recorded five sacks in seven games. Hey also has 15 total tackles, pass defense, and nine quarterback hits, while sporting a 75.4 Pro Football Focus grade.
On the flip side, the 49ers have struggled to get to the quarterback this season. Fellow star defensive end Nick Bosa hasn’t been as effective in 2023, with only four sacks to his name currently. San Francisco’s secondary hasn’t done them any favors as well, allowing close to 300 passing yards in each of the last two games.
Additionally, the 49ers will pay roughly $600,000 to Chase Young for the rest of the season. The Red & Gold’s third-round pick they are moving in the deal is a compensatory pick from the loss of right tackle Mike McGlinchey in free agency.
After sitting out most of the trade deadline, John Lynch and the 49ers make a big splash with less than 90 minutes remaining until the window closes.
Here’s Chase Young’s numbers this season:
• 79.7 pass-rush grade (career high)
• 18.4% win rate (career high)
• 5 sacks
• 38 pressuresWelcome to the #49ers!! pic.twitter.com/ZD8oW4RJQ1
