The San Francisco 49ers have been knocking on the doorstep of a Super Bowl trophy for a few years now, most recently making the big game in the 2019 season. Now four years later, a former 49er, Richard Sherman, believes this is the year they get it done.
The former cornerback turned sports personality revealed on his podcast recently that 2023 will be the year the Lombardi trophy comes home to the Bay Area. But, he added, every single playmaker needs to be on the field to make that happen.
“I think the Niners finally find a way to get it done this time,” Richard Sherman said. “Brock Purdy has not lost a game that he has started and finished, to this day. They need to get Nicholas John Bosa, the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, signed immediately. But unless something crazy and drastic happens with that situation, I expect their defense to be really strong with the addition of Javon Hargrave from the Philadelphia Eagles.
“Then you got Fred Warner and Talanoa Hufanga. Deommodore Lenoir on one side, Charvarius Ward on the other. Defensively, they’re going to be really solid.”

And while the defense has been the 49ers’ bread & butter the last few seasons, the offense will need to help carry the load this season.
Purdy’s return from injury should help that, looking comfortable in the pocket during the preseason. But the young quarterback will need help, according to Sherman, with the offensive playmakers around him ready to assist.
“On the offensive side, Brandon Aiyuk is poised for a really great year, contract year,” Sherman continued. “All Deebo [Samuel] has been talking about is how much he let the team down last season, so he has a chip on his shoulder coming in. And then you got Christian McCaffrey, coming off a full offseason to acclimate, to be comfortable in the space, and I think he’s going to be really comfortable and really happy in the space.
“I’m excited to see what he’s going to do with a full season under his belt, so there is a lot of hope in San Francisco.”
With a roster full of accredited talent, Richard Sherman, like many others, feels that the window is closing fast on the team’s championship aspirations. But in the present, no team is more equipped to make a deep playoff run to glory, giving 49ers Faithful hope for 2023.
