Even though the Sacramento Republic FC lost in a heartbreaking fashion in the Western Conference Finals, the team is still being honored for its strong season. This time, the honors go to goalkeeper Danny Vitiello.
On Tuesday, the USL Championship announced Vitiello has been named the league’s Goalkeeper of the Year, becoming the Republic’s first goalkeeper to receive the honor.

“I’m incredibly humbled and honored to be named Goalkeeper of the Year, especially competing with some of the top guys and fiercest competitors out there, so hats off to them,” Vitiello said in a press release. “There is absolutely no way this award would be possible alone – I have to give a huge thank you and a lot of credit to my teammates, my coaches, and the Sacramento Republic FC organization and fans.”
During the 2023 season, Danny Vitiello recorded 11 shutouts and let only 25 goals go past him in 30 contests. The Republic’s goalie was already awarded the Golden Glove for the season, tallying 82 saves, a save percentage of 76.2%, and a league-best .83 goals against.
Vitiello was also named to the 2023 USL Championship All-League First Team, along with three of his teammates.
