While Sacramento Republic FC may have lost their season to heartbreak over the weekend, the club is still getting their flowers.

Sacramento Republic coach Mark Briggs has been named as a finalist for the USL Championship coach of the year Wednesday. This is the second time the Englishman has been nominated for such award, winning it back in 2017 with Real Monarchs SLC.

Now six years later, Briggs is being recognized as one of the league’s premier coaches. And thanks to his efforts on the pitch, four members of the Republic’s team were nominated for season accolades, the most in the USL Championship.

“These league honors are a testament to the consistency and hard work of these individuals but also representative of the team’s collective achievements in 2023. Connor [Donovan], Danny [Vitiello], Jack [Gurr] and Russell [Cicerone] embody our club identity of Indomitable, and are very deserving of these selections,” Republic FC President and General Manager Todd Dunivant said, via a team statement. “Mark has led our club to new heights again this year and his body of work speaks for itself. We’re proud to call each of them our own as they represent our club and city in the best of the league categories.”

Mark Briggs, 41, joined Sacramento Republic FC in 2018, transforming the club from inside and out. Under him, The Quails earned the top spot in the USL championship western conference in 2023, only the second time in club history. In fact, his side held onto a share of first place for all but one week of the regular season. He also led the club to an unbeaten start through its’ first 13 games, becoming the winningest head coach in club history (50). He has 100 career wins in his coaching career.

Unfortunately, Sacramento Republic FC suffered a heartbreaking end to their 2023 season, dropping out of the western conference final thanks to two late-match goals scored by Phoenix Rising last Saturday. The Indomitable Club is yet to reach the USL Championship playoff final since its’ inaugural season in 2014.

Additionally, the Republic re-signed all-league players Danny Vitiello and Conor Donovan to multi-year extensions Wednesday.
