Andy Thompson, head coach of Sacramento State’s football program, joined The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross, on Monday morning following their 30-23 upset in Stanford. The Hornets remain undefeated through three games with Saturday’s victory undoubtedly being the most notable.

Coach Thompson shared what it meant to him and his team to beat the Pac-12 program former Sac State football head coach Troy Taylor now leads.

“Our guys were very motivated to show that they could play with Stanford,” Thompson said.

His team was successful in proving they could not only keep up but win those big games if given the opportunity.

“We don’t talk a ton about winning every week,” Thompson said. “We talk about being at our very best because that’s what we can control”

This was Sacramento State Hornets’ have managed victories over FBS opponents previously. They defeated Colorado State last season, and Pac-12 opponents Oregon State in 2011 and Colorado in 2012.

Other topics discussed include:

  • The impactful presence of Sac State football fans on the road in Stanford Stadium
  • Building internal belief in the locker room
  • Continuing to be consistent with their work ethic and attitude: “We just want to keep it going”
  • Quarterback Kaiden Bennett is “the heartbeat” of the team
  • Preparing for next week’s matchup with Iowa

Listen to The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross from 6 – 10 a.m. PST, Monday through Friday, on Sactown Sports 1140.
