Sacramento Republic open 2024 U.S. Open Cup against rival Monterey Bay

The Sacramento Republic have been cooking the first few months of USL Championship play, now taking their talents to the national scene of the Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup.
Sacramento Republic F.C. open their 2024 Open Cup journey at home, hosting regional rival Monterey Bay F.C. in the Round of 32. Both squads have not faced one another in Open Cup play, raising the stakes even more so. The Republic aren’t new to the competition, the only second-division side since 2008 to advance to the National Championship Final, doing so in 2022.
But while the Republic have been hot to open the new league year, the Open Cup is whole different beast, needing to get on a roll early Tuesday evening.
“Obviously, the Open Cup competition is close to my heart, close to the club’s heart. It’s a competition that we want to do well in,” Republic coach mark Briggs said Monday. “We’re playing against a very, very good Monterey team, a very in-form team, and obviously a local rivalry. So we’ve got to make sure that we’re at our best and we take advantage of playing at home.”

How have the Sacramento Republic fared recently?
The Quails have been the epitome of consistency to open 2024, remaining unbeaten thus far. Sacramento has a record of five wins and four draws in nine contests, currently at the top of the USL Western Conference standings (19 points). The Republic drew, 1-1, with Phoenix Rising over the weekend.
