Matt Barrows, who covers the San Francisco 49ers for The Athletic, joined The Carmichael Dave Show with Jason Ross on Monday to share what he’s seen from the Arizona Cardinals, takeaways from the 49ers’ Thursday night victory over the New York Giants, how Brock Purdy reminds him of Drew Brees and more.
Their conversation was initially focused on the offseason addition of Javon Hargrave and what he has meant to San Francisco’s defensive line. Having Hargrave playing alongside Nick Bosa, Arik Armstead, and Drake Jackson has been a successful recipe in their first three weeks of play.
Barrows explained why their Thursday night matchup against New York may have been the most encouraging Brock Purdy performance in his young career. When asked who he would compare Purdy to, Matt mentioned Drew Brees.
“It seems like every small quarterback with a not-so-great arm who had immediate success… there are a lot of Drew Brees comparisons… and nobody ever became Drew Brees,” Barrows said.
Barrows was sure to explain that he’s not currently at the point of believing that Brock Purdy is the next Drew Brees, but there have been flashes of similarities.
“I’m holding off, but it’s all there,” He added.
Other topics discussed included:
- San Francisco’s success in gaining yards after catch: “Shanahan knows that if he gets the ball in Deebo Samuel’s hands, that’s going to happen.”
- The coaching staff targeting roughly 40 carries per game
- Brock Purdy’s confidence when the pocket is collapsing
- Injury updates on Brandon Aiyuk and Deebo Samuel
