The San Francisco 49ers will start their Week 10 preparation without star left tackle Trent Williams on the field.
San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed the news during his press conference, sharing that he expects Williams to be held out of practice Wednesday. While the coach would obviously love to have his veteran tackle on the field, his hope is that the player can make it for Thursday’s session instead.
“I hope so, he can’t today though,” Shanahan shared on Trent Williams’ health Wednesday.
Trent Williams will not practice today, although he normally gets vet days on Wednesdays. Shanahan hopes he’ll be back out there on Thursday, but the prognosis remains unclear. Shanahan said that Williams’ history with ankle injuries has slowed this recovery. Repeats that it…

Williams, 35, has been dealing with an ankle sprain for the last three weeks. He picked up the injury in Week 6 against the Cleveland Browns in the first half, playing the rest of the game with the ailment. While the injury was diagnosed as a low-grade sprain, the aging veteran has a history of lower-body injuries, causing a longer recovery time.
“Yeah, I think obviously there is. I mean, he’s got a lot of [injury] history in there with stuff. It didn’t show up as a high [ankle sprain] or anything like that. But when you’ve had that over your career, there’s a number of things with how it’s taken longer than expected to heal, it’s more than a low [ankle sprain],” Shanahan explained.
Wednesday’s absence isn’t the end all be all, however, with Trent Williams typically taking a veteran rest day to start the work week. Thursday will be more of an indicator of his availability entering Week 10.
Besides Williams, the 49ers have a relatively clean bill of health after the bye week.
Wide receiver Deebo Samuel has returned to practice after missing the last two games with a shoulder fracture. Now full go, he is expected to make his game-day return in Jacksonville this weekend.
