After last Sunday’s win, we all knew the NFC Offensive Player of the Game would go to Brock Purdy.
On Wednesday, the NFL confirmed what we all expected. This is Purdy’s first career Player of the Week honors.
Against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers, the second-year quarterback threw 333 yards and three touchdowns for a perfect passer rating of 158.3. At 23 years old, Brock Purdy joined Lamar Jackson and Jared Goff as the only quarterbacks under 24 in NFL history with a 158.3 passer rating.
“He played at a real high level, made real good decisions, was very smart with the ball. He played like his numbers looked. It was very impressive,” 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan said after Sunday’s win.

Brock Purdy has been a revelation for the 49ers since taking over for the injured Jimmy Garoppolo Week 13 of last season. Before Week 11, the last pick in the 2022 NFL Draft accumulated over 4,000 passing yards, 31 touchdowns and only eight interceptions. He added to that Sunday with 333 yards and three scores to his name. Purdy is only the third 49ers gunslinger to have a perfect passer rating, with Joe Montana doing so in 1989.
“Yeah, I mean, what an honor,” Purdy said postgame Sunday. “At the same time, I feel like there’s still some plays and stuff that I wish I had back, so I’m not completely content with just that. But thought it was a great game with the guys around me, the coaching and the play calling. All of it. So that’s a testament to the team really.”
While the QB remained humble, his teammates have been vocal about his play, silencing the “system QB” talk at every turn.

“Yeah, that’s a horrendous statement. That’s never been the case. You could make that argument with any quarterback,” running back Christian McCaffrey stated. “I can show you the tape. If we really sit down and watch all the amazing throws, amazing plays, off schedule plays, and the checks that he’s getting to. It starts with him.”
This is the fifth Player of the Week honors awarded to a 49ers player this season. But funny enough, no player has repeated the honors. Brandon Aiyuk and Christian McCaffrey joined Purdy on the offensive side to be recognized and Fred Warner and Nick Bosa were awarded for their defensive efforts.
Additionally, Purdy is the first 49ers QB to earn the honor since Garoppolo did so in 2019.
They’re tied for the most in the NFC with the Philadelphia Eagles.
