The San Francisco 49ers appear to be adding one more name to their coaching staff, with former foe, KJ Wright joining the Red & Gold.

The former Seattle Seahawks linebacker announced on his podcast, KJ All Day, that he will be the 49ers’ assistant linebackers/defensive quality control coach. Wright elaborated on the decision to start his coaching career in SF, thankful for the opportunity ahead.

“I am thoroughly excited. I am really, really happy for this opportunity. I’m really, really happy for the Niners organization, believing in me, trusting me with their franchise,” KJ Wright said Monday. “And competing against those guys, since Day 1, my first ever NFL game was against the Niners…To Kyle Shanahan, to John Lynch, the 49ers Faithful, I’m excited, I’m ready to roll, this is going to be really, really fun.”

KJ Wright, 34, is a former Pro-Bowl linebacker with the Seattle Seahawks. He was a member of the Legion of Boom, the nickname for the Birds’ top-ranked defense in the 2010s. 49ers new defensive coordinator, Nick Sorensen, was a part of that group as a coach, now bringing his former pupil to Santa Clara.

Wright played in the NFL for 11 seasons, racking up 992 combined tackles. He also had 68 tackles for loss, 27 quarterback hits and 54 pass break-ups. After a decade in the Pacific Northwest, the Mississippi native finished his NFL career with the Las Vegas Raiders in 2021.

While Wright was incredibly successful as a player, his true passion lies in coaching.

“My heart is in coaching, my heart is in building something special. Teamwork, camaraderie, going through the ups, going through the downs, Finding a game plan to be successful. Like, this is what I do, is what I’ve been called to do.” Wright stated.

The San Francisco 49ers have not made an official announcement at this time.
