The Athletic’s Matt Barrows joined “The Drive Guys” Friday to discuss what the San Francisco 49ers have done so far in free agency.
Along with signing DT Jordan Elliott, DE Leonard Floyd, DL Yetur Gross-Matos, CB Chase Lucas, and LB De’Vondre Campbell, the team has also restructured the contracts for multiple players.

Barrows pointed out that the 49ers’ free agency has been very defense-focused, allowing the team to concentrate on offense when the 2024 NFL Draft rolls around in April.
“I would say the number one thing was adding Leonard Floyd at that defensive end spot opposite [Nick] Bosa,” Barrows said, adding the 49ers have struggled to find Bosa’s bookend. “This guy has been mister consistency for the last few years. At least nine sacks in each of the last four seasons. If the 49ers got nine, that would be a tremendous number.”
Additional topics discussed include:
- Why didn’t things work out with Randy Gregory and Chase Young
- Aaron Donald’s retirement and his matchups against the 49ers
- What’s the impact De’Vondre Campbell can have in San Francisco?
- Will Brock Purdy’s contract impact 49ers free agency in 2025?
- Which positions do the 49ers still need to address, either in free agency or through the draft in April?
- Is there any truth to the Brandon Aiyuk trade rumors?
- Have the Philadelphia Eagles had a good offseason?
