The Athletics have optioned right-handed pitcher Michel Otañez to Triple-A Las Vegas, the club announced today. The move makes room on the 26-man roster for left-handed pitcher Sean Newcomb who was acquired from Boston for cash considerations yesterday and is active today.

Newcomb is 0-4 with a 3.95 ERA this year with the Red Sox, tallying 41 strikeouts and 17 walks in 41.0 innings pitched across 12 appearances, five of which were starts.

He originally joined the Athletics in 2023 in a trade with the Giants for OF Trenton Brooks. Newcomb spent 2023 and 2024 with the A’s before being designated for assignment last July. For his career, he is 28-29 with a 4.46 ERA and 479 strikeouts in 472.0 innings of work.

Otañez began the season on the 15-day injured list with a sprained right shoulder and was reinstated to the active roster on May 13. He made six appearances with the A’s, recording a 13.50 ERA with six strikeouts and five walks in 5.1 innings pitched.

Athletics third base coach Eric Martins joined The Allen Stiles Show on Tuesday to discuss their struggles at Sutter Health Park, recovering from their 11-game losing streak, and more.

Rookie first-baseman Nick Kurtz, recently placed on the injured list, had four home runs and nine runs batted in throughout his last five games before going down.

Martins discussed the development he’s seen from the 2024 fourth overall selection since being called up to the majors.

“The last few games is when you can kind of see him finally settled in a little bit,” he said. “I think the first couple of weeks it was a little overwhelming for him. He was just adjusting to the league.”
