The Golden State Warriors have added another player to their roster.

Seventeen-year veteran Rudy Gay (37) “will compete for the team’s open roster spot in training camp,” per ESPN’s Adrian Wojnarowski.

Gay spent the last two seasons as a member of the Utah Jazz.

In 2022-23, he averaged 5.2 points, 2.9 rebounds, 1.0 assists in 14.6 minutes per night. Throughout his 56 games played, he only exceeded 20 minutes twice. At this point in his career, the 6’8″ wing is not typically positively impacting the defensive end.

His efficiency numbers were a career worst as well, as he went 38 percent from the field and 25.2 percent from three, all career lows. That includes 24.8 percent on catch-and-shoot triples and 26.6 percent with no opponent within six feet, per NBA Stats.

It’s the first time Gay has converted less than 30 percent of his three-point attempts in a season. He’s a 34.6 percent career shooter from beyond the arc.

From Golden State’s perspective, they are dealing with the luxury tax, making this signing notably expensive. Rudy Gay is joining Rodney McGruder, who was signed earlier in the week, to compete for a final spot throughout the course of training camp.

Golden State Warriors’ current roster

  • Chris Paul /  Gary Payton II / Cory Joseph
  • Stephen Curry / Moses Moody / Brandin Podziemski / Rodney McGruder
  • Klay Thompson / Jonathan Kuminga
  • Andrew Wiggins / Dario Saric / Rudy Gay
  • Draymond Green / Kevon Looney / Trayce Jackson-Davis
  • Two-Ways: Usman Garuba / Lester Quinones

The Warriors training camp is right around the corner. Their preseason opener is scheduled against the Los Angeles Lakers on Sunday, October 7th. The 2022-23 regular season begins on October 24th against the new-look Phoenix Suns.
