NBA trade rumors are flying, with the February 8th, 2024 deadline just three days away. The Sacramento Kings have been mentioned as interested in plenty of players around the league, with Delon Wright being the most recent report.
Michael Scotto of HoopsHype, says the Washington Wizards have ‘drawn interest’ regarding Wright from the Kings, Boston Celtics, and Minnesota Timberwolves.
Sacramento’s front office, led by Monte McNair and Wes Wilcox, has shown a willingness to be aggressive in searching for potential upgrades while being comfortable enough to be patient if no ideal move presents itself.
Ironically, this regime has traded for Delon Wright previously. In March of 2021, the first season McNair took over for former general manager Vlade Divac, the Kings traded Cory Joseph and two second-round picks for Wright.
After ending that season, the Kings moved Delon Wright to the Atlanta Hawks in a three-team deal that landed them Tristan Thompson from the Houston Rockets. While confusing in hindsight, the front office seemed unsure of their center position at the time.
Richaun Holmes and Alex Len were entering free agency before the Tyrese Haliburton Domantas Sabonis swap. On thing is apparent; their interest in Wright as a player.
Fast forward to modern day, and Wright (31) is on an expiring roughly $8.2-million deal with the Washington Wizards. The 6’5, eight-year veteran is averaging 4.4 points and 2.8 assists on 38.6/37.1/81.5 shooting splits in 15.2 minutes per night.
If Sacramento is unsatisfied with their backup point guard position, currently filled by third-year guard Davion Mitchell, Delon Wright may be an intriguing option. Or, he could simply boslter their depth. Defensively, he should be able to defend multiple positions with his 6’7.5″ wingspan.
Due to his relatively small contract, the Kings could match salary with Washington realively easily. Any of Mitchell, Chris Duarte, or Sasha Vezenkov make the deal financially work without any additional players being included.
Given Delon Wright is on an expiring contract, it may be a short-sided move, but that should factor into the Wizards asking price. We’ll see what direction Sacramento elects to go at the 2024 trade deadline as time continues to tick closer to that marker.
When is the next Sacramento Kings game?
Sacramento’s two-week, seven-game road trip will come to an end on Monday night when the Kings face the red-hot Cleveland Cavaliers.
On November 13th, Sacramento defeated the Cavs by a final of 132-120 at Golden 1 Center thanks to a group effort from the starters as De’Aaron Fox (28 points), Keegan Murray (25 points), Domantas Sabonis (23 points), and Kevin Huerter (20 points) scored 20+ points.
