The 49ers have lost a good amount of roster depth this offseason, losing another member of the defense in Oren Burks.

Reports surfaced Saturday afternoon that former San Francisco 49ers linebacker Oren Burks is signing with the Philadelphia Eagles on a one-year deal worth up to $2.5 million. The move ends a two-year stint in the NFC West, becoming the Red & Gold’s third LB in 2023.

The Athletic’s Diana Russini was first with the news Saturday.

Oren Burks, 28, was a third-round pick in the 2018 NFL Draft by the Green Bay Packers. He spent four seasons in the NFC North before coming over to San Francisco in 2022. The Vanderbilit alum has accumulated 176 combined tackles in six NFL seasons.

During his 49ers tenure, Burks became a consistent depth defensive option, able to plug in on multiple facets of the game. He logged 84 combined tackles, four TFLs and two pass break-ups in only eight starts. Burks was also a contributor of the special-teams unit, playing more than 60% of the snaps on multiple occasions.

Burks now joins an Eagles squad he faced in the 2023 NFC Championship game. Philadelphia has undergone some retooling as well, adding former Buccaneers LB Devin White earlier in the week. While it’ll be an uphill battle, earning a starting spot is in play for the former 49er.

The Red & Gold have acted quickly to replenish their LB room, signing former All-Pro De’Vondre Campbell Friday. SF re-signed fellow backup LB Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles the same day. Both veteran options should serve as holdovers until Dre Greenlaw fully recovers from his achilles injury.

Key offseason dates for the San Francisco 49ers

  • March 24-27 – Annual league meeting in Orlando
  • April 25-27 – NFL Draft in Detroit
