Amick, who broke the news of the hire, joined the show to discuss the behind the scenes of the hiring process

Thursday morning on The Carmichael Dave Show with Matt George, respected journalist and NBA insider Sam Amick of The Athletic joined the show to discuss the Sacramento Kings hiring of Monte McNair as their new general manager.

Amick broke the news late on Wednesday night that Sacramento had made their decision, hiring the former Houston Rockets assistant GM to run their basketball operations department.

Interview with Sam Amick of The Athletic begins at the 02:40 mark

During the interview on Thursday’s show, Amick shed some light on the interview process, the role that Joe Dumars played and more.

Amick shared some insight on what the process was like for Sacramento, noting that the team has been bad for so long that credibility is starting to play a role in hiring respectable candidates:

“They have struggled so much in the past–obviously, 14 years–that they are up against it reputation-wise. Meaning, that it was not great to come out of the gate and have three people in fairly short-order pull out of the race,” he said.

“I do think that there were some other folks who they had interest in that weren’t part of that group of six (candidates). Once they learned that the interest wasn’t mutual, they didn’t include them, obviously. The intel for me was all over the place, it seemed like it was (Sachin) Gupta. And then it seemed like (Wes) Wilcox seemed to have some momentum. I heard that he did well in his interview.”

Joe Dumars, who has been a special advisor to the Kings ownership group and was interim general manager until the hiring of McNair, has been named Chief Strategy Officer for the franchise.

On Dumars role, Amick stated that some candidates did not want to get involved with the former NBA Executive of the Year:

Over the course of the interview, Amick goes on to shed plenty of light on the interview process, why the team tapped McNair for the role (or why McNair choose them), how Vivek’s son Aneel is now a big part of the team’s decision making and more.
