Listen to the former guard breakdown his career, time playing against the Kings and much more

This week on The Jason Ross and Doug Christie Show, the guys had the opportunity to catch up with former All-Star and 14-year NBA veteran Nick Van Exel.

Over 14 years in the league, Van Exel averaged 14.4 points, 2.9 rebounds and 6.6 assists per game. During the 1997-98 season, Van Exel made the NBA All-Star game where he scored 13 points for the Western Conference All-Stars.

Interview with Nick Van Exel begins at the 22:37 mark

Van Exel is currently a scout with the Dallas Mavericks, having joined their scouting staff prior to the 2019-20 season. The former guard had been an assistant coach with the Memphis Grizzlies since 2016 before joining the Mavericks scout team.

Kings fans might remember Van Exel from his incredible series with Dallas in 2003, a second-round matchup that went to a deciding Game 7.

The talented guard topped the 30-point mark in three games, scoring 40 points in a Game 3 win for Dallas. Over seven games, Van Exel averaged 25.3 points per game on a blistering 45-percent from beyond the three-point arc.

On playing against the Kings, Van Exel shared his thoughts:

“Well, I know I remember the first year (2002), they kicked our butts. I specifically got my butt kicked by Mike (Bibby) and Bobby (Jackson). So, that summer after that playoff series I went back to my home in Houston and just plastered about 29 point-guards on my wall in my weight room,” he said.

“I just worked out that whole summer. And the only reason I was working out was to play the Sacramento Kings again that next year.”

Over the course of the interview, Van Exel went on to breakdown his performance against the Kings in the 2003 Playoffs, reflect on his career, what it was like playing with Kobe Bryant and much more.
