It’s official: Deebo Samuel is bringing his college number to the NFL.
The San Francisco 49ers star wide receiver has officially changed his jersey number from 19 to 1 ahead of the 2024 NFL season. Samuel made it official on his Instagram Tuesday, hinting at the change a week prior. After five seasons in the NFL, Samuel gets his preferred number back. On top of that, his nameplate will change to “Samuel SR”, a nod to his two-year-old son.
The 49ers confirmed the news on their social media as well, doing so with a video demonstration.

Deebo Samuel, 28, wore #1 throughout his football journey, including at the high-school and collegiate levels. In four years at South Carolina, he racked up 2,230 scrimmage yards and 23 total touchdowns. He was drafted with the 36th overall pick in the 2019 draft by the 49ers.
Since changing his number to 19, Samuel has grown exponentially, becoming one of the best playmakers in the NFL. He has amassed 5,129 scrimmage yards and 38 total TDs in 66 regular-season contests. Additionally, Samuel has 926 all-purpose yards and nine scores in the postseason.
Deebo Samuel is entering Year 2 of a three-year, $71.55 million extension with the Red & Gold. He’s coming off a 1,117-yard 2023 season, reaching the endzone 12 times as well. The South Carolina product holds a $28.63 cap hit for next season.
Will the jersey change prompt a return to All-Pro form for Deebo? Only time will tell.
